Live Report From the Alaska Brain Injury Conference

By Bruce Stern

ADVERTISEMENTS

This week finds me in Anchorage, Alaska at the Alaska Brain Injury Conference. The Alaska Brain Injury Conference involves both locally and internationally renowned experts who highlight the latest developments in identifying, diagnosing, treating and promoting long-term quality of life for people who experience disability due to brain injury. Rehabilitation professionals, service providers, caregivers, family members and advocates are attending. This unique conference is devoting considerable time reviewing current ABI service and treatment practices in Alaska and how newly developing approaches can be incorporated within the diverse cultures and regions of the state. The conference is sponsored by the North America Brain Injury Society (NABIS) and the Alaska Brain Injury Network (ABIN). ABIN and NABIS have assembled an all-star cast of 38 experts on the subject of brain injury for this meeting. The speakers reflect a broad range of brain injury disciplines and are nationally recognized leaders in their field.

Day one was devoted to the opening and plenary sessions. Attendees heard  Kathleen Bell, MD (Brain Injury Etiology, Classification and Early Management, Ellen Deibert, MD - Concussions and Mild TBI), Janet Williams, Ph.D. (Community Services with and without Resources), John Corrigan, Ph.D. (Substance Abuse and Addictions), Ronald Savage, EdD (The Developing Brain After TBI:  Predicting Long Term Deficits and Services for Children, Adolescents and Young Adults), and Alaska State Senator Lesil Maguire, who was the sponsor of Alaska Traumatic or Acquired Brain Injury Program.

I look forward to day two when I will be speaking on the topic of Guardianship and other legal rights.
