Lawyers in Fiction, Part 2: Romance

By Mariko

ADVERTISEMENTS

It’s not the sort of thing that most of us advertise, but sometimes a romance novel, trashy or not, is precisely what we crave.  Who’s to claim that lawyers are any different…or that lawyers aren’t a good subject for romantic flights of fancy.

Amazon has a list of Lawyers Romance Books, which includes everything from Harlequin and Silhouette novels to Paranormal Romance to rather more serious books like Sophistry–A Romantic Comedy by Doctor Virginia L. Oates Henderson (which is non-fiction, as far as I can tell).  Julie Koca, an attorney, writes lawyer-centric romance novels and screenplays under the nom de plum Julie James, as this article from The Chicago Reader chronicles.

The blog “Appealing in Nevada: Discussing the Law of Nevada and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals” published by Nevada attorney Tami D. Cowden, includes a selection of blog posts about When Lawyers Write.  These posts vary, but two of the top three are a post showcasing the gay romance written by a lawyer and an article about a lawyer who was apparently fired over a book written under a pen name.  Did I mention that the author of the blog also writes romance?
