Don't Like the Arizona Immigration Law? Whom Should You Boycott?

By Eric Lipman

ADVERTISEMENTS
The fallout from the passage of Arizona's controversial new immigration law (.pdf) continues to rain down. While celebrities from Ozzie Guillen to Shakira have come out publicly against the law, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio -- who announced yesterday that he will not resign his post to run for governor -- has been running the cable news circuit defending the law, which many say simply justifies questionable tactics his department is already employing. There has been lots of talk about boycotts (and now, counter-boycotts). Mike Dorf, at Dorf on Law, ran an interesting post this morning about what kind of boycott might be justified, assuming one feels strongly enough opposed to the law to take some action. Dorf mentions the easy cases -- boycotting AriZona Iced Tea = silly -- but also explores the closer questions. Should a boycott be directed at any Arizona-based business (the Arizona Cookie Lady, for example) or only at official state-sponsored activities? How do you factor in the notion that any boycott will likely have a negative effect on Arizona residents who are also against the law? Readers: do you have any thoughts on what sort of protest actions, if any, are appropriate?
