: Legal Pad | LAReport clears CIF of bias allegations
By Richard Binder
In a 28-page report, attorneys Jack Clarke and Megan Moore from Riverside-based law firm Best Best & Krieger LLP found no evidence to support the complaints of parent-activist group Citizens Against CIF that the federation's San Diego office has demonstrated bias against less-affluent schools within its jurisdiction.
Allegations arose when Eastlake High was disqualified from the CIF San Diego Section girls basketball playoffs for using an ineligible player prior to its semifinal game. The team was initially handed a four-year ban from the playoffs, though that ruling was later reduced to include just the 2008-09 season. Citizens Against CIF argued that the reduction didn't occur until after the school fired coach Janet Eleazar, concluding that section officials intimidated Eastlake officials into dismissing their highly successful coach. The group also accused section officials of failing to interview key witnesses in cases and ignoring violations by more affluent schools.
