Lawyers in Fiction, part 1: Introduction and Comics

By Mariko

ADVERTISEMENTS

Lawyer fiction abounds, but it’s usually just that.  John Grisham’s courtroom dramas frequent the New York Times Bestseller List, and almost all of us had to read Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird at some point in high school.  But what about other branches of fiction, the ones that aren’t about lawyers but have lawyers in them, or that are about lawyers, but which fall into different categories, such as comic books, fantasy and/or science fiction, chic lit, medical dramas and more?  Where do they fit in, and where can you find out more?

Check out Marvel and DC Comics:  She-Hulk, Daredevil and Two-Face (Harvey Dent) are all lawyers, as are many lesser known characters such as the shapeshifting X-man attorney, Evangeline Whedon and Jean Loring, who was an attorney and The Atom’s ex-girlfriend before she went insane and became the host of supervillian Eclipso.  This is hardly a conclusive list; it leaves out a number of DC and Marvel characters, as well as all of Dark Horse, Devil’s Due, and Image creations.

If any of these lawyers strike your interest, following the links gives you a place to start.  For the best of Daredevil, check out the run written by Brian Michael Bendis.  Next week: Science-Fiction and Fantasy Lawyers.
