Children Injured on Metal Domes in Brooklyn Bridge Park?s Playground

By Paul Napoli

ADVERTISEMENTS

It was not an auspicious beginning for the metal domes in the playground of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park. A little girl suffered injuries while playing on the domes within hours of the park opening in March, reported the New York Daily News.

Robert Foley, 39, of Brooklyn, wrote a letter to the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corp. on March 23 after his five-year-old daughter Kira broke her nose and knocked out a tooth on the steel playground domes. After demanding to see testing data proving the equipment is safe for children, the response Foley received was a call from the park's insurance company about filing a claim. He wants the metal domes removed and told the New York Daily News that, 'They look innocuous but they're really dangerous.'

That is not the only complaint about the metal domes. The direct sunlight on the play structures causes the steel surface to get so hot it has caused burns on children. Park officials erected tents to shade the domes temporarily after The New York Daily News exposed the dangerous conditions. This became ineffective as the metal heated again as the sun shifted.

Park officials posted signs warning the domes can be hot and that they expect the problem alleviated when the trees fill in with leaves.

The trees are young and some think they will not offer enough shade in the near future to keep the domes cool. Parents are calling for removal of the domes, fearing the summer heat and sun will make the steel surface even hotter and increasing the hazard to children.
