Unemployment

ADVERTISEMENTS
As a third year law student I am doing the annual "rush and find a job so you can pay your bills and eat and become a productive member of society and not have to come crawling home to Mom & Dad admitting that you just can't hack it in the big bad world" ritual. And um, you know there are lots of options for those of us out there:

- Beg your current employer to hire you. Hope that if they don't hire you as an attorney they will allow you stay on clerking for pennies after the bar in case you haven't found anything else.

- Hit up Mom/Dad/Aunts/Uncles anyone you know that knows anyone who might be hiring a full fledged newbie attorney.

- Send your resume out en masse. To everyone who appears to have a legal department, a law practice, or has legal problems. People with problems need real lawyers too.

- Scour the classifieds.

- Move home with Mom & Dad and lie in bed all day bemoaning your student loan debt and your lack of employment

- Evade your landlord and use your saved up rent money to buy food. Like Ramen noodles & off-brand mac & cheese.

- Meet with every attorney you know for "lunch" and hope to get some sort of good information out of them. Like, you know, if they need an underling.

So far I'm employing a- hit up employer and g- hit up all attorneys I know. So far I have netted the following:

- My lawyer from my little lawsuit awhile back said I can move to Louisiana and work for their insurance defense firm

- The attorneys I have met with (partners! at big fabulous firms!) have told me I have a great resume and experience, and if they hire anyone they'll call me. In the meantime, I should not have kids. Kids are verbotten. Female attorneys with kids are looked down on. Um thanks people. Reaaaaal uplifting.

- Mr. BPLF and I have been doing a Mexican Hat Dance around a meeting. We schedule one, it gets moved. We schedule another, it gets moved again. But....(you knew this was coming didn't you?) we have a fairly solid meeting time for tomorrow.

Ahem. I am going to march into Mr. BPFL's office and tell him why his firm needs me. Little, 25 year old, blondie, non-licenced attorney, me. Yes. This will go well. He will take me very seriously I'm sure. I'm sure when I tell him about mah skillz and mah experiences he will rush to put me on the payroll and get me into the 401k plan.

Oh God. Please send me good wishes. If nothing else, please send me good stomach vibes so I don't vomit my Starbucks good-luck latte and my granola bar on his Gucci loafers.
