COURTS: "Man sentenced to 6 months after punching lawyer in court"

By Michael Stevens

ADVERTISEMENTS

Very interesting.  Would punching out a judge, a juror, a prosecutor, a witness, the bailiff, a police officer, or a bystander have resulted in nothing more than a contempt charge and 6 months in jail?

From the Herald Leader:

A central Kentucky man who punched his lawyer during a court appearance last month has been sentenced to six months in jail.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that 30-year-old Peter Hafer was sentenced for contempt of court. No other charges have been filed against him in the incident.

Hafer attacked public defender Doug Crickmer while the lawyer was speaking before Scott County Circuit Judge Rob Johnson on Feb. 4.

Hafer has a new lawyer, Mark Bubenzer. He says his client is sorry for what he's done and didn't mean to disrespect the court.

During his sentencing Monday, Johnson reprimanded Hafer, saying the courtroom would be in chaos if everyone facing criminal charges behaved as Hafer did. The judge said that wouldn't be allowed to happen.
