: New York City Personal Injury LawyerTylenol Recall Expanded to Include Array of OTC Products due to Odor and Illness
By Paul Napoli
January 15, 2010
McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the largest consumer company within the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, is expanding its November 2009 Tylenol recall to include a long list of products.
The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to voluntarily recall certain lots of over-the-counter products sold in the Americas, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Fiji because of consumer reports of an unusual moldy, musty or mildew-like odor that has caused gastrointestinal events including nausea, stomach pain, vomiting or diarrhea.
An investigation by McNeil Consumer Healthcare determined that the musty smell is caused by the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) resulting from the breakdown of a chemical used to treat build wood pallets that transport and store product packaging materials. The company is recalling all products it deems have a potential to be contaminated with the chemical.
The list of recalled products includes various Children's Motrin, Children's Tylenol, Benadryl, Extra Strength Tylenol, Motrin, Regular Strength Tylenol, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, St. Joseph Aspirin, Tylenol 8-hour, Tylenol Arthritis and Tylenol PM. For a complete list of products and lot numbers, visit http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Safety/Recalls/UCM197813.pdf
McNeil encourages consumers to stop using these products and contact the company at 1-888-222-6036 for instructions on refund or replacement. Consumers who have medical concerns or questions should contact their healthcare provider. Report any adverse reactions to the FDA's MedWatch Program by fax at 1-800-FDA-0178, by mail at MedWatch, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787, or on the MedWatch website at www.fda.gov/medwatch.
