Tylenol Recall; Oops they did it again

By Barbara Tubridy Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

Tylenol manufacturer, McNeil Healthcare LLC, a division of Johnson & Johnson, has expanded the recall of products to include more than two dozen over-the counter products. Apparently McNeil has determined that trace amounts of a chemical called, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA) has been found in some of their products. This chemical is applied to the wood of the pallets that some of their products are transported and stored on. The consumer complaints have ranged from nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The recall action is precautionary and voluntary and has been made in consultation with the FDA. Although the FDA criticized McNeil for their slow action when complaints first surfaced in 2008 and testing confirmed the presence of TBA in September of that year.

The recalled over the counter drugs include:

  • Tylenol Arthritis Pain Caplets, Geltabs
  • Tylenol Regular and Extra Strength Caplets
  • Tylenol Extra Strength Cool Caplets
  • Tylenol Extra Strength EZ Tabs
  • Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gelcaps
  • Tylenol Regular and Extra Strength Tablets
  • Tylenol 8 Hour Caplets
  • Tylenol Extra Strength PM Caplets, Geltabs, Gelcaps
  • Rolaids Antacid Tablets
  • Benadryl Allergy Tablets-148 count
  • Motrin IB Tablets, Caplets
  • Simply Sleep Mini Caplets

Children's Product Recalls:

  1. Children's Tylenol Bubblegum Meltaway
  2. Children's Tylenol Grape Meltaway
  3. Motrin, Junior Strength Grape, Orange Chewable Tablets
  4. Motrin, Junior Strength
  5. St. Joseph Chewable Orange Tablets
  6. St. Joseph Aspirin Enteric Coated Tablets

See the McNeil Products website for the specific NDC and UPC Codes, and Lot numbers for recalled products. Also, McNeil has set up a Consumer Care Center at 1-888-222-6036 if you need help in determining if a product that you have at home has been recalled although when I called was unable to get through. I was hoping to provide information on what consumers should do with these products to: 1. return the recalled items, 2. get their money back or an exchange, but I was unable to find that on their website or get through on their Consumer Care line.
