Massive Drug Recall Initiated By J&J

By Chrissie Cole

ADVERTISEMENTS

Several of Johnson & Johnson's popular over-the-counter brands are being recalled across the country due to an unusual odor in select brands.

The recall involves 27 different over-the-counter medications, some of which include: Children's Motrin, Children's Tylenol, Benadryl, Extra Strength Tylenol, Tylenol 8 Hour, Tylenol Arthritis, Tylenol PM Motrin IB, Regular Strength Tylenol, Rolaids, Simply Sleep and St. Joseph Aspirin.

A complete list of the recalled products, including product types, lot numbers, and UPC codes, can be found on the McNeil Product Recall Web site.

According to WebMD, the odor comes from a chemical, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole or TBA. TBA is produced when fungi break down a commonly used fungicide called 2,4,6-tribromophenol. The full health effects of TBA are not known.

The FDA said about 70 people have been either sickened by the odor — including nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. No serious medical reactions have been reported.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of Johnson & Johnson, recalled lots of Tylenol Arthritis Pain with the EZ-Open Cap in December.
