: Oklahoma Family Law BlogDHS Employee Fails To Report Sexual Abuse
By Dan Nunley, Esq.
Here is a appalling example of a state agency found to be contributing to the abuse and neglect of the very children it has been charged to protect. And to add to the outrage, research reveals that this is just one of many examples of DHS' failings.
Last week, a DHS case worker was charged with a misdemeanor count of failing to report child abuse. During a home visit last summer, the case worker observed a foster father kissing a fourteen year old foster child yet the case worker chose not to comply with her duty to report the inappropriate behavior!
And get this! A criminal conviction will not cause the case worker to lose her job with DHS because state law requires employee termination only in the case of felony convictions.
On New Year's Eve, someone else observed the foster father kissing and fondling the fourteen year old. Unlike the DHS case worker, this person reported the incident to the police. The resulting police investigation against the father uncovered the DHS employee's failure to report. The father has been charged with a felony count of sexual abuse of a child.
