Life Outside The Bar

ADVERTISEMENTS
By this time next week I will be starting the final day of summer from hell. The Lexis rep at my school told me a few months ago that finishing the bar is as close to the feeling of getting out of prison that she ever wants to experience in her life. Before the bar everything is scary, there?s not enough time, and you?re just trying to get through every day without a major breakdown. After the bar it?s like you have a whole new lease on life. You can sleep in if you want. The trees are greener, the sky is bluer, and you can justify the 3 hours by the pool with your friends and family.

I?m not entirely sure I have had the right approach to my bar studies this summer. I don?t think I?ve done enough practice essays, I think I started the huge process of memorizing 16 subjects too late, and although I?m not doing bad on the MBE questions, I?ve done far fewer practice questions than many of my friends which likely won?t help me get a score high enough on the MBE to cushion any essay blow I might be facing. But that being said, the summer hasn?t been miserable because I haven?t let it be. Sure, I haven?t had a summer jam packed with fun, but I?ve seen friends, been to trivia almost every week, watched plenty of TV, slept a decent amount almost every night and have seen at least 8 movies in the theater (prior to this summer the last time I?d seen a movie in the theater was over a year ago).

Would I do things differently if I had to start the summer all over again? Sure. Were some of my choices detrimental to my bar studies? Probably. If I fail the bar am I going to be pissed that I chose to spend time relaxing and hanging out with friends this summer? HELL NO! Yes the bar exam is big, yes it?s the most important exam of my life. But it doesn?t just happen ONCE. It?s offered twice a year, and I don?t have a job contingent on passing the first time. Yes, it will suck to fail, but it won?t be the end of the world. Life will go on.

Which brings me to the point of this post: Trivia Boy. There was a request in the comments to a post a few days ago for an update, so here it is. Trivia Boy and I, along with a few other members of the trivia crew hit the usual bar last night for our weekly gathering. I swore up and down when summer started that I would not be at trivia the week before the bar, but yet there I was. After spending 12.5 hours in the library yesterday I figured a break would be good. Somehow by trivia ending at 10pm Trivia Boy had talked me into heading to the movie theater down the street to see Transformers. It didn?t even start until 11pm. It?s almost 3 hours. Do the math. Somehow he managed to talk me into seeing a movie that I wasn?t all that interested in seeing, about a bunch of silly robots running around earth blowing crap up, that didn?t get over until almost 2am one week before the bar. How he managed to do that I will never know, after all I told him flat out when that movie came out a month ago that there was no way in hell I was going because the first one was soooo terrible. Before you all jump to conclusions though it was not one of those kind of late night movie dates, we really are more like brother and sister than friends who might hook up. He?s someone I hope is still a friend 10 years down the road that can look back on this summer and laugh along with me at how absurd it was that our other friends thought we should be a couple.

What?s even more entertaining is that within the past 2-3 weeks Trivia Boy has developed one of those ridiculous school boy crushes on The Rebel. It?s almost painful to watch at times. He made me swear secrecy that I wouldn?t tell her, although I know that she knows. I swear I feel like I?m trapped inside a middle schoolers life. I already know that if he asks her out she?ll say no, so maybe it?s a good thing he doesn?t actually ask. She?s got a long distance guy that things are starting to heat up with, she lights up every time he calls and she has a policy against going out on dates when she?s kind of already seeing someone (that?s my policy too!). So that?s it for the Trivia Boy update.
