: Legal Pad | LAFired assistant O.C. sheriff wins back pay
By Jonathan Hayter
Orange County is on the hook for $485,000 to George Jaramillo, a former assistant sheriff whom Carona fired in 2004, according to the Orange County Register.
Plus attorney fees.
Judge Andrew P. Banks ruled that Carona broke the law in firing Jaramillo, who never received the required notice that he faced discipline and never got an administrative hearing.
The award covers back pay from March 17, 2004, through Jan. 28, 2008??two weeks after Carona resigned under indictment on public corruption charges,? the Register says.
?In his ruling, Banks wrote that he found credible Jaramillo?s claim that he was fired because he ?notified former Sheriff Carona that Carona?s use of County property, including automobiles and helicopters, for sexual liasons, was improper,?? the newspaper notes.
Carona was convicted in January of witness tampering and sentenced to federal prison. He?s due to start a 66-month sentence in July. Jaramillo himself pleaded no contest to public corruption in 2007 and was sentenced to serve one year behind bars and pay $10,000 in restitution
