: Legal Pad | LAMalpractice claim back to haunt Perkins Coie
By Richard Binder
The 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles reinstated a legal malpractice claim against Perkins Coie in a protracted battle between the law firm and one of its former clients. The lawsuit was brought by In4Network, which hired the Seattle-based law firm in 2002 to sue the University of Southern California over a deal for surround-sound technology gone awry.
A lower court in 2007 dismissed the malpractice action, claiming the law firm charged excessive fees and mishandled the USC case. The attorney representing the company says they are seeking punitive damages and about $1 million in actual damages.
The Wednesday decision, which stems from a second amended complaint filed by In4Network, likely means more appeals and motions on the docket for the long-running dispute between the former client and the law firm.
