: Ross Ipsa LoquiturGreat Little Utility - Thanks Scott Barer!
By Ross
Culled from the daily treasure trove of knowledge otherwise known as the ABA’s Solosez listserve comes this great utility tip from Atty. Scott Barer, a list regular from Woodland Hills, California. I’ve been looking for one of these for, literally, years. Here’s the scoop from Scott:
“One thing (among several) that has irritated me me about my new computer is that if I want to see if the hard drive is active (e.g., when trying to determine if a program or installation was hanging), I literally have to get down on my hands and knees to see the hard drive LED. I was doing some research to determine if I could relocate the LED, or add another one to the system, when I came across this little free utility called Float LED: http://tinyurl.com/cb2l4s.
What it does is monitor your hard drive’s activity and displays it as a tiny icon on your desktop. The icon blinks green when the the HDD is reading, and red when it’s writing. You can set the icon to always be on top of the other windows, or you can set it to disappear under other windows. If you double click on the icon for the C drive, for example, it will open up the C drive in Windows Explorer. It doesn’t use much RAM — right now as I look at it it’s using 4,292k.
I’ve only been using it for an hour or so, but so far it seems to work as advertised. YMMV.
