Change the World

By Useless Dicta

ADVERTISEMENTS
I participated in my first presidential caucus tonight. In 2004 my state had a late primary and John Kerry was already the for sure democratic nominee and in 2000 I wasn?t yet 18 (yup I?m a mid-80?s baby). What I saw tonight during this somewhat obscure yet fascinating caucus process was absolutely incredible. I saw this thing called ?change? first hand, and it was an experience that makes me proud again to be an American and to stand up and exercise my right to vote. People of all ages, races, and backgrounds turned out for this caucus and at least among the democrats, the sentiment in the room was not necessarily that we were there only to be voting for one candidate over another, but that this is the start of a year in which we can together actually fuel change and turn a new page in the future of this country. The fact that the democratic nominee will either be a woman or an African American speaks to just how far we have come as a nation and the kind of change that is possible for the future, for the first time in a long time I am actually optimistic about the future.

That being said, I?m supporting Obama all the way and I was thrilled to see that he won my state. I saw Obama speak in my state last week and the man is absolutely incredible. I haven?t really been able to vote in many elections (especially not presidential elections) but this is the first time ever that I can remember being this excited about a particular candidate.
Overall I think Obama did very well tonight, and although he wasn?t able to absolutely seal the deal I think that it is better that Clinton and Obama remain in a tight race because it means that the campaigning and the debate will continue allowing states voting later in the schedule to still matter in the big picture of the democratic nomination process.

It?s an exciting time in American politics for sure and I am proud to say that I am a part of it, this election will likely go down in the history books
