Career Goals

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments on my Stolen Lines post. I look forward to when Grace "hosts" it again- maybe I can tell you a more uplifting story, one that doesn't involve snot & flooded apartments? Your comments let my mind wander to where it often does, "Hey! I could write a book!"...before I laugh and think "I'm not writing a book unless it is the best darn book ever written. And I can't do that." Growing up in the literary family I grew up in, with my Grandmother having two in home libraries, one begins to sift through the books...they fall into two categories. One is "light and fun and cute" and one is "darn good stuff"....there is a third pile we call that the "Crap" pile & don't deal with it or count it.  Anyway...I think I could write a "light and fun and cute" book but I don't think I have a story in me for the "darn good stuff" and I am just not writing a book unless it falls into the category of "great classics a/k/a darn good stuff." But! I'm glad you liked my story!

Among my other career goals (read: ways to pay the grocery & electric bills) was to apply to be a national company's test-prep teacher. You know, teach some ragamuffins how to fill in bubbles & quickly answer reading comprehension questions. Today was my "audition" in which I had to arrive, ready to present a 5 minute "How To" seminar. There were other applicants, who all went before me, and so I was able to watch their "How To" seminar...and so I had a list of handy tricks ready for my presentation.

1. If it is a 5 minute "how to" one should not be finished in 1.5 minutes.

2. If the dress is business casual, your ugly cheap suit is probably too much. Conversely, man with the sweater that was rolled up to his nipple line, what look were you going for?

3. You should actually know how to do whatever it is you are teaching us. This audition is not the opportunity to discuss an idea on how to do something you clearly had while high on something, but didn't actually bother to, um, learn how to do it. Thus, your 6.5 minute presentation (again, can you not tell time?!) on what you were thinking about one day doing was a complete and utter waste of my time.

4. So all of you want to teach the LSAT eh? And all of you are going to law school in the fall are you? Word to the wise: RUN. RUN NOW.

5. Don't spill 1.5 minute man's prop (a bottle of vanilla cream soda) on your application. Oh what? That piece of advice was for me? Whatever. Whatever I say. It gave my application a nice scent & crinkle really.
