Why McCain and Huckabee Are Unacceptable to this Conservative

ADVERTISEMENTS

Huckabee: This dude is seriously out of control. His consistent populist attacks on wage payers almost frightens me more than his raising taxes, granting clemency to murderers or the way he plays the religion card. Seriously, watch this video and see if you don't feel the same way regardless of your theology. Let?s amend the Constitution to bring it in line with ?God?s standards?? Why would any conservative vote for this guy? Fred Thompson articulates succinctly many other reasons why Huckabee would be unacceptable to conservatives.
McCain: I have never liked him (as a politician) since I read about McCain-Feingold during my undergrad days, which, even without my high priced legal education, I knew was just a complete betrayal of the First Amendment. He cannot make a distinction between tax cuts and spending, he voted against the Bush tax cuts, hits the same populist notes as Huckabee, and he's a loon on the environment. Even in the war on terror, which is his strong suit, he'd close down Gitmo and crack down on coercive interrogation techniques. You'll notice I didn't put down his immigration stance as a reason to oppose him, largely because I agree that we need immigration reform and rounding up 12 million people just doesn't seem practical to me, though I detested the way he tried to shove it down the American people's throats.
Anyway, that's why seeing Huckabee and McCain win Iowa and New Hampshire was so disconcerting for me. As a side note, with all this Huckabee/McCain stuff, I realized that Fred Thompson and Rudy are more than acceptable conservative alternatives in comparison to these two yahoos should Romney not be the nominee. I just wish Fred and Rudy were doing better so I wouldn't get stomach ulcers. However, given how poorly they're doing in the polls, it's up to Romney to be the conservative standard bearer, which, in my humble opinion, he has been all along.
