Bicycle safety tips....

With Christmas bringing new bicycles to both kids and parents, the importance of bicycle safety should be stressed to all new cyclists. Unfortunately, this past weekend a South Alabama resident was riding his bicycle and was struck by a car, which caused his death. What makes this accident even more tragic, it appears this accident could have been prevented.

According to this article, the cyclist was not wearing any clothing with reflectors, and was in camouflage.

Here are some basic safety tips for cyclists of all ages:

1) Always check your tires, making sure the seat is secure and the chain is properly oiled. Double check the brakes and make sure they are working smoothly and quickly.

2) Take a safety course. I would recommend the League of American Bicyclists that can be reached at 410-539-3399.

3) Place reflectors on the front, rear sides and pedals. Also, wear a safety vest that has reflector strips.

4) Cycle defensively. Expect a car to pull out from the side street or turn left in front of you.

5) Cycle with the flow of traffic, never against it. If traffic is heavy, walk your bike across an intersection.

6) Leave at least three feet of distance when passing parked cars to avoid doors being opened.

7) Always wear an approved helmet.
