60 Refugee found dead on Yemen Beach

By immlawyer

ADVERTISEMENTS

The universal human drive to better one's life resulted in tragedy. The bodies of 60 would be refugees were found on a Yemen beach. Article here.

Canada's geography generally eliminates treacherous sea and land crossing (but it has been known to happen). Despite the obvious risks, thousands of people risk peril in the desperate hope of eventual safety, security and prosperity.

Excerpt:

NAIROBI, Kenya - Sixty corpses of would-be refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia were found on a beach in Yemen over the weekend after smugglers forced many of them overboard, an international aid agency said Monday.

Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said the latest victims on the notoriously perilous smuggling route had came across the Gulf of Aden from the Somali port city of Bosasso, fleeing war and poverty at home.

In one of two incidents that caused the deaths, smugglers tipped the refugees into the sea at night after noticing lights on land and fearing they would be spotted by the coastguard, MSF quoted survivors as saying.

The situation is also grim in the Congo, where thousands of refugees (more properly termed internally displaced persons) are without food.
