No on 8: This Time It's Personal

By Andrea

ADVERTISEMENTS

Dan and I haven't made any political contributions since the primaries, because if one person does the other person will run and donate to their candidate, causing expensive Mutually Assured Destruction of political advantage. Too bad. I had to turn down a very earnest DNC caller who wanted me to give money because "Republicans will stop at nothing" to win races, etc. (I also told her I was married to a Republican and they're not all evil - but wished her lots of luck.)

Today we finally realized how we could use the money we would have contributed. We gave $100 to the No on 8 campaign in California. And high-fived.

Last week, after three decades of one of the best relationships I have ever seen, two people who have been like backup moms to me got married in California. (Yay! With that, all three of the unmarried couples at our tiny wedding ceremony are now married!) So this is for them, but it's for us, too. We got married in Massachusetts three years ago instead of in NY or CA because MA was a state that had marriage rights for all, and so this issue is part of the fabric of our marriage. It's for an uncle Dan still misses, and our many buddies who we want to see marry whoever they want.

If you live in California, or know people who do, don't you dare think that voting on November 4th isn't important because the presidential result there is a foregone conclusion. This is important. This is personal, dammit! Get your butt out there and help my home state keep treating regular people like regular people.
