What Mother thinks of Me Being A Lawyer

By attorneydavid

ADVERTISEMENTS
Since someone asked. Mother and father weren?t too happy about me going to law school. Dad wanted me to get an MBA. However; since, before I went to lawschool I was going to work in shorts and polos as an equity trader (glorified daytrader), dad was happy I was going to any graduate program. As everyone knows, though, the only truly rewarding career path to please a parent is being a doctor.

Then somewhere in the middle of law school or just before Arthur Andersen blew up. All the lawyer jokes ceased since Dad had worked there as a CPA.

My parents still don?t have the highest opinion of lawyers and worry I might be too honest to be a lawyer. Mother is also greatly worried about the law corrupting me. Mother also worries someone might try to have me killed, which I think is a bit extreme, but being a divorce lawyer has a tendency to not engender warm fuzzies. When I was in lawyer school I remember there was a divorce lawyer killed almost every year. Once in particular, I remember a story about a lawyer being shot through his storefront law office. Clearly, living on the second floor is a good idea.

Regarding the honesty issue, I really haven?t had an excessive problem. I?ve also always been very rule bound. I also regard people who insist that failing to follow what you regard as the ideal rule set as opposed to the actual rule set to be hypocritical and intellectually lazy.

On the positive side, my parents are happy I ?m starting to earn a good income at work I find intellectually exciting.
