North Carolina Radio Host Reports Anti-Obama Chain E-Mail Distortion As Fact

By Ryan Singel, Kevin Poulsen, Sarah Lai Stirland, Kim Zetter, and David Kravets

ADVERTISEMENTS

Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama has done everything during his campaign to ensure that voters get the facts about his personal background and beliefs.

WBT News Talk Radio's Jeff Katz show's web page is running this debunked picture on its site with the caption: "Here is Obama refusing to put his hand over his heart while saying the pledge. And this man could be our next President?"

His campaign has spent record amounts on television advertising, outspending rival candidate Hillary Clinton, set up an online fact squad and launched a counter viral e-mail campaign to battle online whisper campaigns that seek to undermine voter trust. Most recently, his North Carolina team announced an off-line, on-the -ground "truth squad."

Obama's faced questions about his religion and his patriotism all the way along the campaign trail. But now that online whisper campaign has made the jump to a North Carolina news talk radio show, where Jeff Katz, a conservative talk radio show host, has posted a photo and repeated a now-debunked anonymous viral e-mail claim that the Illinois senator "won't pledge to the flag."

The local radio station, WBT News Talk Radio, has even inserted a rotating advertisement that runs against the disputed and debunked photo.

An e-mail sent to Katz Monday evening asking why his show is running inaccurate information wasn't returned.

North Carolina holds its Democratic presidential primary next Tuesday.
