Nevermind the Exchange Rate, We?re Off to France!

ADVERTISEMENTS

frenchflagWith the U.S. dollar trading so poorly against the euro, we suspect that many have scuttled any thought of a summer European vacation, opting instead for travel closer to home. But for all those brave souls insistent on heading across the pond, here are a couple stories to get you primed. They come from France.

  • French politicians called on Tuesday for stiff penalties of up to three years jail and heavy fines against “pro-anorexia” Web sites and publications that encourage girls and young women to starve themselves. Here’s the Reuters story.

The law, aimed mainly at sites where anorexics share experiences and tips, would impose penalties of two years plus a fine of 30,000 euros for “incitement to excessive thinness by publicising of any kind.” The Health ministry estimates there are around 30,000-40,000 anorexics in France, most of them young women. There has been increasing debate over the condition since Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died from anorexia in 2006.

  • Also from Reuters: French former film star Brigitte Bardot went on trial on Tuesday for insulting Muslims. It is the fifth time she has faced the charge of “inciting racial hatred” over her controversial remarks about Islam and its followers.

Prosecutors asked that the Paris court hand Bardot, 73, a two-month suspended prison sentence and fine her 15,000 euros for saying the Muslim community was “destroying our country and imposing its acts.” Bardot has been fined four times for inciting racial hatred since 1997, at first 1,500 euros and most recently 5,000.

Prosecutor Anne de Fontette told the court she was seeking a tougher sentence than usual, adding: “I am a little tired of prosecuting Mrs Bardot.”
