Opposition to Detroit Downsizing

By Alan Ackerman

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Michigan Citizen

The real problem with the proposal for shrinking Detroit is that it is being presented as though public officials just discovered that we have lost half our population. Most people in Detroit have been wrestling with this reality for years. Many have developed ideas and practices that are inspiring people around the world.

Pretending that these don't exist is taking Detroit down the road to disaster. Real leadership is not coming up with schemes that ensure short-term corporate profit. It is based on what people are already doing and engaging them in discussions and making decisions that will lead to real change because they come from the ground up. We have the opportunity not only to redevelop our city but to develop a )new and vibrant democracy in the process.

The article prepared by Shea Howell covers a very different attitude towards Mayor Bing's opposition to any proposal allowing for massive redevelopment in downsizing Detroit.

The article begins by describing the post-war movement into Palestine is 'disastrous', but the reality is that the article emotionally claims that this is akin to ethnic cleansing.

One should read this whole article to fully comprehend the contrarian on Detroit's downsizing.

I have read the Michigan Citizen in the past, and this blogger truly appreciates that the Michigan Citizen was about the only support this blogger's lawfirm had in challenging the Poletown decision from when the Hathcock case was first filed.  However, we certainly part ways on the subject of improving the City of Detroit.
