: The GavelOn the National Low Income Housing Coalition Annual Report
By Speaker Pelosi
Our nation faces a significant shortage of affordable housing, and I commend the work of the National Low Income Housing Coalition in publicizing the problem and advocating solutions on behalf of low- and moderate-income families. The Coalition?s annual Out of Reach Report offers a statistical framework for understanding the challenges working families face with the rising costs of housing, typically a family?s single largest expense.
The report provides a sobering picture of the widening gap between the increasing costs of rental housing and the stagnating wages of working Americans. In showing a detailed picture of higher rental costs in communities across America, the report demonstrates the need for strong federal action to increase the supply of affordable housing.
The Coalition?s work was instrumental in House passage of legislation to construct, preserve, and rehabilitate up to 1.5 million of affordable housing units over the next 10 years. I look forward to working with the Senate and the Bush Administration in enacting this critical legislation into law.
