Diet Safety: The body cleanse does more than just cleanse...

By Megan Roth

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you’ve read any of the articles I posted in the past week, you probably already know where I stand on weight loss and diet safety. I’m not a skeptic, I’m a realist. I believe any pill that sounds too good to be true probably is. Any cleanse that flushes your system probably does it, but why is that a good thing? And any topical treatment promoting the loss of fat cells in just plain ludicrous.

And while I’m not alone with my viewpoint, there are (quite obviously) many that don’t quite see eye-to-eye with me. That’s okay – I accept this.

But for the sake of argument, let me give an overview of the body cleanse – not one in particular, just a general overview. I’ll combine this rundown with an explanation of why this can be incredibly damaging to your physical well-being when conducted extensively or beyond the means recommended.

A cleanse can be conducted in any number of processes; however, the intentions of each are essentially one and the same. A body cleanse is intended to instantly improve one’s health. It’s a sort of detox, if you will, which rids one’s systems of damaging chemicals and other harmful materials.

These cleanses do just what they claim and ‘flush your system’ – problem is, they don’t distinguish between harmful materials and essential nutrients. Thus, not only are you not taking in essential nutrients during such cleanses, you’re also flushing those that are stored in your body out.

This process results in an array of less-than-positive side effects, including headaches, anxiety, muscle soreness, weakness, insomnia and increased irritability (you’re not eating anything, what’d you expect?!). Another commonly reported side effect is sores of the mouth…hmm, now that sounds pleasant.

Granted, many feel the adverse side effects are minimal as they are suposed subside quickly and leave their victims feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

At least that’s how the story goes. And the story goes that way only when the cleanses are used as directed (whatever crazy method that may be). It’s scary to me how quickly such cleanses can turn from beneficial and renewing to dangerous and deadly when used extensively or over a prolonged period of time. In such instances, the multitude of body cleanses can actually rid much more than negative chemicals and materials; they might actually start ridding parts of your body as well. Now let’s not go to extremes, I’m not saying one of your kidneys is going to be flushed out in the cleanse; however, your cells will be depleted and the functioning of your system will likely be affected.

Really, people, is that worth it? If you (or anyone else you know) has been affected by body cleanses, diet pills or other weight-loss supplements, contact the Lombardi Law Firm.
