: IPBizLA Times still getting it wrong on stem cells
By Lawrence B. Ebert, Esq.
Critics have grumbled that the agency has oversold promises of stem cell cures and of the potential payback to state coffers from royalties earned from scientific discoveries. Even with last week?s announcement of a clinical trial, many institute boosters say real-world treatments, and any financial benefit to the state, might be a decade away.
The backers of Proposition 71 didn't tell voters the truth about hypothetical benefits and didn't even discount putative future benefits to present cash value, an error that lottery players can appreciate. The clinical trial has nothing to do with Prop. 71 research.
The LA Times has been getting stem cell stories wrong in the past.
