They'll Have to Trade Knives While Standing

By Anne Skove, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS

We were disappointed to hear that the benches have been removed from Kentucky's Knox County courthouse.

According to irate letter-writer Ms. Janice Vinson, the courthouse is a gathering place for many -- those who have court business, sure, but also those who do not have a/c in their homes, knife-traders, people attending community meetings, etc.

Other areas lacking seating include the sheriff's office and county clerk's office.

We smell retaliation or some form of find-the-funding. Anyone know the backstory here?

We once heard from a Texas judge who refused to sit in his new ADA-issue bench because it was too short, but making people stand all day long is ridiculous. SRO may be OK for young people trying to see a show, but not for people trying to access courts and county offices. It's called a "county seat" for a reason.

See Where Have the Benches Gone in the Knox County Courthouse?" Janice Vinson, Times-Tribune (September 3, 2008).
