Michael Moore's Slacker Uprising

By jeremyblachman

ADVERTISEMENTS

I just watched Slacker Uprising, Michael Moore's new film that he's streaming for free at SlackerUprising.com.  It's a bit of an odd movie, basically a concert DVD of Moore's 2004 tour of college campuses trying to get young people to vote.  The thing is, even though Moore is usually a pretty big presence in his movies, in this one Moore *is* the movie.  And it's dull.  It's a lot of footage of Michael Moore asking people to vote, and people saying they're going to vote.  No wonder he has to release it for free.  I liked Bowling for Columbine.  I thought Farenheit 911 was a very watchable movie.  I liked Sicko, even though it was largely inaccurate and misleading.  Michael Moore has made some very watchable, very compelling films.  I think he's very good at what he does, even when he twists facts to fit his premises, and even if you disagree with his politics.

But this movie isn't very good.  I think that's because he's not trying to prove anything.  He's just saying people should vote.  Over and over again.  In different cities.  There's lots of cheering, and some musical performances.  But it's basically a concert video, and it's just not that interesting.  Oh well.  Hopefully his next one will be better.
