Facebook and Your Career

PC World has an excellent article entitled "Facebook Etiquette: 10 Rules for Better Socializing"

One excerpt in particularly rings out:

"Oversharing on Facebook can be a problem. Every meal eaten, every TV show experienced, and every weather condition observed need not be the subject of a status update. Ask yourself whether anyone is likely to care about your comment before you start typing".  I would add that one should "pause", "ponder" and "think before you act". If you choose to friend lots of people in your industry, who you do business with AND, intermingled with the narashkeit, promote marketing materials of your employer on your Facebook wall, you may want to think before posting stuff such as:

"Sitting outside in a special unknown area with no name people counting the number of hookers that walk by. Hookers = Chicks that sleep with guys to get ahead in life. Thank GOD I am not one of them".
-actual Facebook status update by structured settlement industry member August 16, 2009.

This author and several other of this individual's friends and structured settlement industry friends on Facebook have tried to be subtle about it to no avail.

While one can appreciate some whimsical expression, I'm quite confident that the employer does not want its goodwill associated with a discussion of hookers or how much one has paid in parking/traffic fines. Do we need this tsouris? There's an old expression "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." ?Mark Twain

At the very least familiarize yourself with the granularity features of Facebook.
