Connecticut Sports Concussion Legislation Awaits Governor's Signature

By Michael Kaplen

ADVERTISEMENTS

The Connecticut legislature has given final passage to a bill that attempts to help coaches and trainers of student-athletes to recognize the signs of concussions and requires them to take students out of games if they show those signs.

The Senate gave final legislative approval to the bill earlier this week. The legislation now awaits action by the Governor of Connecticut to become law.

The legislation requires anyone with a state permit to coach intramural or interscholastic sports to receive periodic training about recognizing and treating concussions.

A student sidelined for a suspected concussion would need medical clearance before returning to play.

If the bill becomes law, proponents say Connecticut will become the third state to have a concussion awareness law on the books.

A similar bill is awaiting action in the Massachusetts Legislature.
