Citizens United Ruling not Until Next Year?

By Peter Hardin

ADVERTISEMENTS

A Supreme Court ruling in the important campaign finance case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission is not expected until next year.

On Monday, Dec. 14, the high court expects to issue only orders in cases and not any opinions, according to a post in SCOTUSblog, based on a public announcement from the court.

After Monday, the court does not plan to return to public sessions until Jan. 11. The court held a re-hearing in Citizens United on Sept. 9. The closely watched campaign finance case has stirred up emotional debate over prospects of unleashed corporate spending at election season if the Supreme Court overturns key precedents.

Justice at Stake submitted an amicus brief in the case, warning that allowing corporations to pour even more into the flood of special interest money in judicial elections ?would have a profound and negative effect on the selection of state court judges and could damage the integrity of the judiciary.? You can read the brief by clicking here. You can learn more about the Citizens United case from Gavel Grab or from a JAS press release on the case.
