Brain Injury and Violence

By Michael Kaplen

ADVERTISEMENTS

Violence is the leading cause of TBI in urban areas and of TBI related deaths in urban areas. These injuries include assault, attempts at suicide, domestic violence, and gunshot wounds. In addition, studies have shown that almost 80% of persons with violence-related TBI had a history of substance abuse.

According to the CDC?s jail and prison studies, up to 87% of inmates report having experienced a brain injury.

The Brain Injury Association of New York State has scheduled a conference to explore these important issues.  The conference will provide an opportunity for professionals from the TBI field, mental health, substance abuse agencies and programs serving individuals involved in domestic violence situations to learn about the impact of and challenges faced by individuals dealing with the aftermath of TBI and violence.

The conference is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2010 from 9:00am?4:30pm at the offices of OMRDD 1st Floor Auditorium located at 75 Morton Street New York City.

You can register on line at the brain injury association of new york state web site.
