Top 10: Best New Musical Discoveries

By scott

ADVERTISEMENTS

This list (in no particular order) is meant to be of people I have seen or heard about this year that took my fancy in some way or other. People that for the most part you wont have heard of, but that you should listen to. And in true Spinal Tap tradition, this top ten goes up to eleven.

[It was only when I finished this list that I noticed it was mostly women or female fronted bands]

1. Pull in Emergency ? A band I saw live on the off chance and was rewarded with a rare treat. A really promising new indie rock band. I really like this band. Album was one of the best by a British artist this year. Check out: Everything is the Same
2. Polly Mackey and The Pleasure Principle ? A band I hope become huge next year. Liverpool/Wrexham roots for one of the best new bands I saw live this year. Fronted by the delightful Polly Mackey. If you yearn for another band like Sleeper then this could be your lucky day. I’m eagerly awaiting an album. Check out: Silent Film
3. Josephine Lloyd ? One of those people you automatically hate (not really!) She seems to be the type of person who can play and master any instrument. Currently playing the African Harp. Check out: Weathered
4. Ashley Fayth - From around London. Delightful voice. Another with the potential to be big. Check out: Peanut Butter
5. Libby Trappe ? From London. Plays the piano and writes songs that Dresden Dolls would be happy with. Check out: Piggy Boy (one of my favourite tunes of 2010)
6. Hannah Scott - Wonderful voice, great songs, and a big future. Check out: Cathedrals
7. Bergman - From London (via Sweden). Writes whatever takes his fancy, but has a good ear for a nice hook. Check out: Ever Since and She is Sunshine, She is Rain
8. Christine Bovill ? From Glasgow, so I had to include her. A more bluesy/folk performer, but some of her more folk numbers stand out. Check out: Lighthouse Keeper.
9. Hella Better Dancer ? Friends of Pull in Emergency. Bits of PJ Harvey, but done as if she was writing for The Cure. One of those bands that isn’t quite there yet, but the potential certainly is. Check out: The City Sea
10. Now Now ? The non UK entry. Kind of Paramore but played by Giant Drag. Check out: Giants
11. Vicky Hart - Another London girl, playing acoustic music. Check out: Better to Fall
