: Information OverloadTop 10: Films 2010

Again, in no order.
1.The Kids are Alright ? Bar one brief part of the film where it almost looses itself, this was one of the better studies of the family dynamic and how familiarity, routine and change can effect family relationships/marriages. It also happens to be the most naturally funny film I saw this year.
2. The Father of My Children (Le père de mes enfants) ? The Words ‘laugh’ and ‘minute’ are not ones you reach for much in this well constructed study of a family in downward spiral. Some great performances by the actors playing the kids.
3. Toy Story 3 ? Would certainly have to now take the prize for the most consistently good film trilogy. 3 was right up there with 1 and 2 is demonstrating how to make a film for kids, which is not a kids film.
4. Gainsbourg ? Excellent and inventive bio-pic of the French singing icon. Eric Elmosnino is fantastic in the lead role and had this been in English he would have been a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination. Want to know how good he is, see if you spot him in a minor role in The Father of my Children.
5. The Social Network - A film about computer nerds which is not afraid to have people talking a lot.
6. Kick Ass ? Swearing children, Nick Cage doing ‘Batman’ and lots of violence (comic book style ? or should that be graphic novel?) What’s not to like?
7. A Single Man - That scene with him getting dressed. Just mesmeric. Loved every minute of this.
8. The Blind Side ? I can’t help it, try as I might, I just couldn’t not like this. Heart-warming and amusing and as true to fact as any of these style of ‘true story’ movies are.
9. Inception ? Total bonkers, but in a good way. A clever ? almost too clever ? futuristic thriller.
10. A Prophet ? A classy old school prison/mafia movie. Lots of tough talking, lots of violence and general unpleasantness and a stella performance by Tahar Rahim in the lead role.
