: Stephen's LighthouseSocial Networking takes more time than e-mail
This week's PC Magazine has an interesting little article based on some AC Nielsen research:
More Time Spent Social Networking Than on Email (PC Magazine March 10, 2009)
Intriguing soundbites include:
"One in every 11 minutes online globally is accounted for by social network and blogging sites, the group found, or 45 billion minutes in total. That works out to a bit more than a combined 85,500 years spent on blogs and social networking sites in Dec. 2008 alone."
People spend an average of 3 hours and 10 minutes per month updating their Facebok pages.
"A search engine was used by 85.9 percent of the world's population, followed by what the firm called "general interest portals and communities," such as Yahoo, with an 85.2 percent reach."
"Interestingly, growth in social networking is being driven not by the young, but by the middle-aged. The category of men and women aged 65 and above moving to social networking grew by 7 percent, Nielsen found, while the 2-17-year-old category dropped by 9 percent. The most popular age group with Facebook in terms of growth is the 35-49 category, which increased by 24.1 million people."
Hmmmm. Is there any doubt that libraries belong in the social space?
