Sen. John Ensign, of Nevada, has introduced a bill (S. 3695) to allow federal prison Inmates who volunteer to work 50 hours a week. Called the Prisoner Opportunity, Work, and Education Requirement Act (I'll pause here while you work out the snappy acronym), the bill would empower Federal Prison Industries, as sub-contractor, to put the inmates to work in light manufacturing activities run by private-sector contractors. The wages the inmate earned would be divided between, among other things, defraying the cost of the inmate's imprisonment, paying victims restitution and compensating the inmate for mandatory expenses You don't suppose assembling firearms is a light manufacturing activity, do you?
