: Slaw.caEmail Signatures as Advertising
By David Cheifetz
Does the advertising in this professional email signature, below, bother anyone, if even it is accurate in the sense that “Best Lawyers” whatever that is named Ms. Legate “a” or even “the” - we can’t tell from the signature – “lawyer of the year 2010″. (In passing, I do know what Best Lawyers is. But most non-lawyers won’t.)
Is it like an Oscar, to which we might apply what a member of some branch of royalty is reputed to have said about something else: “those who like that sort of thing will like that sort of thing”?
Apart from likes or dislikes, what are your views on the value of the advertisement? It doesn’t appear on the home page of Ms. Legate’s web site. My suspicion is that that would offend an LSUC rule on what’s permissible. It’s also not part of the text one sees when one opens up her description on her website. In the result, those who see it most often will be her clients and others she sends email to, including other lawyers.
