Character Assassination by Anonymous Posting

ADVERTISEMENTS

A lawsuit filed by two students at Yale University Law School tests whether anonymous free speech rights trump the right to sue for defamation.  The two students were the objects of salacious anonymous posts on at Yale's law school discussion board, AutoAdmit.com.  The suit, filed in federal district court, is likely to set important precedent as to whether the right to anonymous free speech, used by the Founding Fathers in publications such as the Federalist Papers, can be used as a shield to prevent private individuals from suing to protect their reputations.  See these accounts at the National Law Journal and National Public Radio .
