The affect of the same-sex marriage ruling on the justices

By Jason Siegel

ADVERTISEMENTS

There have been strong emotional responses to the California Supreme Court's ruling overturning the ban on same-sex marriage.

Some are contemplating how to challenge the ruling, including a ballot initiative for a constitutional amendment. Some people who believe same-sex couples don't have the right to marry have said negative things about the Chief Justice Ronald George who wrote the majority opinion.

KPBS discussed the possibility of California voters attempting to remove George, as they did in 1986 when Chief Justice Rose Bird refused to impose the death penalty.

"This may be a case where the state Supreme Court has anticipated where the country is going, but it doesn't leave them safe from reprisals," Independent Sacramento political consultant Leo McElroy told KPBS (LISTEN).

McElroy said he hadn't heard any talk about reprisals yet but "there is great anger...they very probably will go after him."

Meanwhile on Wikipedia, the justices are getting no respect, or disrespect, Cal Law's Legal Pad points out.
