* With the rise of litigants acting on their own without lawyers, the work of the Personal Support Unit (the advice bureau in the Royal Courts of Justice) is more crucial than ever. So the unit has done well to be selected as the charity of choice for BBC Radio 4?s appeal. In a programme about its work on Sunday night, Lord Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice, said: ?As a judge I saw far too often in front of me struggling, frightened litigants on their own. Sadly, a judge can give only so much advice and help. I know, despite my best efforts, they would often go home believing that justice had not been done.?
