Twenty-five criminal cases dismissed in Riverside County last month

Riverside County dismissed 25 criminal cases in August because there weren't any judge to hear them, the Associated Press reported (here).

In July, 22 cases were dismissed because defendants weren't getting their Constitutionally guaranteed speedy trial, the AP reported.

"We've had felons had their cases dismissed. We've had child molestation cases dismissed, armed robberies, domestic violence cases dismissed," Riverside Deputy Dist. Atty. Chuck Hughes told ABC 7.

Assistant Public Defender Robert Willey disagrees.

Willey told ABC 7 that "most of the cases that have been dismissed have been low grade misdemeanors where the individuals are not in custody. On those felonies that have been dismissed, the DA immediately refiles those charges and those individuals have remained in custody."
