: Legal Pad | LABrothers charged in real estate scam
By Richard Binder
Two brothers, David and John Zepeda, were charged this week in a real estate foreclosure fraud that authorities said victimized more than 300 people throughout Southern California.
San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said starting in 2006 the brothers used fraudulent means to take over homes facing foreclosure. The scheme took their victims for nearly $1.5 million. Investigators raided the Zepeda's home in the San Bernardino area and seized a white Bentley sedan, gold watches, diamond bracelets and rings, $335,000 in uncashed checks, $33,000 in cash, gold coins and silver ingots.
The brothers each are charged with 106 felony counts. John Zepeda has pleaded not guilty. David was ill in an undisclosed San Bernardino-area hospital and will be arraigned later, according to authorities. Both men face up to 72 years in prison if convicted.
