: Blawg for ProfitCompiling a Post Series on your Blog
If there is one thing I try to do it is to practice what I preach. How many times have I written that one of the best sources for your post ideas are the questions you get from clients. I had one of those questions this morning from one of our new bloggers and it was like a kick in the head. Why haven’t I posted about this more on Blog For Profit. Her question had to do with writing a post series on her new blog. It wasn’t that she wasn’t convinced she should do a series. Her question had to do with other postings during the series.
In the process of answering her question I gave her a way to take the series a step further.
If I am running a post series, should I post other material between the series post?
My short answer was sure if you have the material to post. The question was a good one. And her concern was also legitimate. Our new blogger was concerned if they did additional postings between the post in the series, the impact of the series would be diluted. I personally don’t think so. And what is great about posting and posting and posting, even during a post series, you are putting up content. Plain and simple. Will it dilute the series? No.
One of the reasons you are posting to your blog is to provide content to your audience in a form and fashion they can use and understand. Which is exactly why you should, if you have it in you, continue to post between those post in a series. And this applies to a series that is running for a set number of days in a row. I wouldn’t get crazy and perhaps only post one other post between each series post. And maybe not even every single day. But I certainly don’t think it hurts a thing.
And for full disclosure, this is a very new blog and they are doing a great job. Posting to the blog on a regular basis and posting some great, relevant content. What’s more, since it is a newer blog, putting up a lot of content in the first couple of months is key too. So, by all means post, post and post some more.
Here is my bonus tip I gave her.
Take your series of post and compile them in one place for your readers when you are done
Once you are done writing and posting your new post series, you need to compile all of the links on one “Page” in your blog. Give a brief description of the series and/or a reason why you wrote the series. And make this a “Page” in your blog. What you then need to do is give your readers a way to get to that list of post in that series. What I have done on Blog For Profit is put a “Best of…” at the bottom in the footer. There I include a link to the “Page” I have drafted for each series I have done. It is a great way to keep those series out in front of your readers.
But here is your bonus, bonus tip. Don’t stop there. Take the exact same links you put on the “Page” you did for your series and make a final blog post in your series. That way the post hits the search engines and is also assigned the same category as the series you just did. Give your readers every possible way to find all of the information you are putting out there. If you are concerned about duplicate content and Google, change the final post up as far as the text. But make sure you compile all of the links for the series in this one post location.
During the post series, invite your readers to subscribe to your blog often
This is a great idea for a number of reasons
- Your readers are not going to want to miss each post in the series
- You are offering them the chance to subscribe and it is FREE to do so
- They may actually not know or remember they can subscribe to your blog
- You are going to increase your subscriber numbers by reminding them to subscribe
Your Assignment
Start planning a series now for the month of September and start writing the post now. Use the built in feature of WordPress or your favorite blog editor and post date them starting in September. A series is a great way to generate traffic and subscribers to your blog. If you are doing a series and it is a good one, your readers are going to come back as the series is running so they don’t miss anything. And don’t forget to invite them to subscribe in each series post so they don’t miss future updates.
Also don’t forget to subscribe to the Blog For Profit Newsletter. We include information in the newsletter we don’t feature here on the blog. And when you subscribe, you get a free copy of our eBook , Blogging Tips to Help You Blog.
