Is Your Blog Mobile Friendly?

ADVERTISEMENTS

Experts seem to agree that although the recession has hurt some sectors, Smartphone users are growing.   And with that growth, more and more Smartphone owners are accessing the Internet via their mobile phones.  This means that chances are  a section of your blog readers are going to be reading your blog from their iPhone, Blackberry, Palm or other smart phone device.

Have you considered what type of experience your mobile readers are getting?

I know I hadn?t.  But I should have, and so should you. If your blogsite doesn?t load properly or is difficult to read on a mobile device, you may be losing readers.  And having a mobile friendly site might just increase your readership.

Does that mean that you should redesign your site?  Certainly not.

Mobile readers of your blog aren?t interested in your design, sidebars and widgets, for them its all about the content.  They simply want to see your blog posts.  There are several ways you can accomplish the goal of a mobile ready blogsite without doing anything to your current design.

If you?re using Wordpress, which I highly recommend, it can be as simple as adding a plug-in like iPhone/Mobile Admin, the Wordpress Mobile Pack or Mobilize by Mippin.

If you?re not using Wordpress, you can build a mobile friendly version on mobisitegalore.com.

Want something simpler? Google offers a free mobile optimizer tool that allows you to input your site?s feed URL and it converts it to a mobile friendly page.  Or add your feed address to the end of Google?s mobile feed reader http://www.google.com/reader/m/view/feed/[insert your feed here] like I?ve done here http://www.google.com/reader/m/view/feed/http://feeds.feedburner.com/ClericalAdvantage .  You can then offer the simple link as the ?mobile? version of your website.  It?s not as pretty or customized as some of the other choices, but it does allow mobile readers a fast and clean way to view your blog.

Yet another option is to turn your blog into an app using a service like Motherapp.  Of course, your mobile readers would have to have the ability to install the app on their phone in order for this to work for them.

These are just a few of the many choices you have available to help your blog become mobile friendly. If none of them work for you, use your favorite search engine to find blog to mobile conversion that works for you.

Ignoring mobile blog readers is sort of like believing you are invisible if you close your eyes.  Open your eyes to the importance of your mobile readership and make it easy for them to become part of your blog community.
