I rock at networking

I ran into a woman conducting OCI who OCI'd me last year. One of the only places I had no call back. She and I had spoken since at networking events, and she's always been nice. Just not remotely interested in hiring me. She recognized me right away:

Her: Hey, Butterflyfish, did you find a job last summer?

Me: I did! I ended up at [Summer Firm], which is just slightly smaller than your firm, and I really liked it. It was an outstanding experience.

Her: So you're all set?

Me: Well you know, they won't make hiring decisions til the spring. They liked me a lot, so I am hopeful, but looking.

Her: That's too bad -- we're thinking of scrapping OCI and just hiring laterals ourselves.

Me: But you just did OCI?

Her: Yeah... with about the same results as last year. *sigh*

(NB: No one form my school got a callback there last year.)

Me: So I guess this would be a bad time to offer you my updated resume? (laughs because I am only half kidding and she knows it)

Her: Yeah, well you know we don't take 3Ls. We have our summer class. Your CSO just asked us to take on a recent grad who was hired at [flailing firm], and we declined. But good luck!

Me: Thanks. (muttering, I didn't want to work there anyway . . .)
