The last Democratic debate

The last Democratic debate was a spectacularly uneventful affair, which wasn't surprising given that no candidate wants to risk a negative storyline this late in the game. Instead, the candidates stuck to their well-rehearsed pitches, and all of them managed a pretty competent job of it, despite having flown from Iowa to Washington and back in the space of a day. Barack's testament to Joe Biden's commitment to racial equality might have been the debate's high point, and, as a number of commentators noted, looked downright presidential--a sort of gravitas that provided a visceral counter to any allegation of inexperience.

With this last chance to talk policy behind them, the Democrats will spend the next couple of weeks intensely focused on their field operations; identifying and getting to the caucuses every possible voter. The Obama campaign recently had the clever idea of getting email list subscribers to write thank you notes to volunteer precinct captains across Iowa, something that will, hopefully, help keep energy high during the campaign's final days. It is a great race, and it'll be a great deal of fun to follow it to the finish.
