Freakiest Story of the Day

I have a voracious appetite for news and I surf the internet daily to satisfy that hunger. Rarely have I read a story that made me just close my computer and walk away. This is that story.

Quote of the Day

As a coreligionist with Harry Reid, it gives me no pleasure to say that he is perhaps the worst majority leader in the history of the union. Here is the latest buffoonery to come out of his mouth.

?As we look back in history, the Founding Fathers would be cringing to hear people talking about eliminating earmarks,? Reid said, noting that the Founders dictated in the Constitution that all spending should originate in Congress, not the executive branch.

James Madison is turning over in his in his grave.

Most Interesting Story of the Day

This story by David Mamet entitled ?Why I Am No Longer a Brain Dead Liberal? was a little self serving, but man, in parts, it reminded me of C.S. Lewis explaining why he?s no longer an atheist, which is as big of a compliment as I can give. Mamet?s essential point is that the liberal mantra of ?people are horrible and will destroy each other unless we make the government bigger? didn?t mesh with reality. Money quote:

The Constitution, written by men with some experience of actual government, assumes that the chief executive will work to be king, the Parliament will scheme to sell off the silverware, and the judiciary will consider itself Olympian and do everything it can to much improve (destroy) the work of the other two branches. So the Constitution pits them against each other, in the attempt not to achieve stasis, but rather to allow for the constant corrections necessary to prevent one branch from getting too much power for too long.

Who Would You Give Money To?

This week I?ve been hit up by both my law school (for the class gift) and my undergrad (supposedly for inner city scholarships). This prompted the question in my mind who should I give my money to? I?d be more likely to give to my law school largely because they need it a lot more than my undergrad. UCLA has a huge alumni base, one of the largest alumni bases in the country in fact. And I don?t think UCLA is hurting for money. The rate they build buildings on campus while I was there and fire coaches suggests to me they have money to burn. Santa Clara on the other hand is not a public school, doesn?t get the same level of tax payer money and the facilities are in dire need of help. There is no contiguous law building where one can go to class, library, moot court, administration, etc. There are like 8 different buildings that the law school functions out of. Furthermore, the library is ridiculously out of date. So based on need, SCU gets the nod. But should it be based on need? If I based it on what school I enjoyed the most, and with whom my loyalty lays the most with, I?d have to go with my high school. I attended Long Beach Poly longer than I have grad and undergrad respectively, and it was there that I felt most involved. I?ve been married for most of my higher education life, so any extra time I had, I spent it with my wife. And most importantly, I didn?t have to take out loans to go to Poly.

At the end of the day, this is a totally academic question. I just paid both institutions lots of money in tuition. I think the only time that I?d ever feel comfortable giving money to either of my schools is after I?ve paid off my loans. I?ve enjoyed my time at my law school and my undergrad and would love to contribute to both, but right now, it?s just not happening.
